My first impression: Kodiak Island is AMAZING! Flying in I am met by snow capped peaks and lush green mountain flanks. They are numerous – more than I can count and as far as the eye can see!

The water is a deep blue. I’m treated to a sunny day, which are not prolific in this part of the world. Sun makes this place magical. Everywhere I turn its gorgeous. Mountains to rocky shores… trees dripping with moss to pocket beaches.
Kodia
k is the second largest Island in the US. It’s around 80 miles long with an intricate coast line and many peninsulas creating infinite nooks and crannies to explore. Of course – you can only get to them by boat or plane because 2/3 of the Island is National Wildlife Refuge with no roads.
Kodiak is rich in wildlife. The ocean is the source and its abundance feeds this land. It’s home to the Kodiak Brown bear. They are huge, can weigh up to 1,200 lbs and stand 10ft high on their hind legs. I stood next to a real size wood sculpture in the museum and I was dwarfed. It’s humbling. These are a sub species of Ursus Arctos who have been separated on this island for over 3,000 years. Related to the grizzly, but larger and having wider skulls.
I am staying with my friend Fishie while I’m
here. She is a warm welcome! My first night she took me out to Near Island. When I stepped out of the car the first thing that struck me was the silence. The quiet peace… with a sea otter as our only company. Absolutely Amazing Welcome!
